Open Cinema Review

About

Open Cinema Review is an independent-minded publication about how films work. It is for curious viewers who want a clearer vocabulary for the choices behind a scene, without needing specialist equipment or a film-school background.

What we cover

We examine framing, editing, sound, production design and cinema history. Articles focus on specific screen choices: where a cut falls, what a room’s arrangement reveals, or how a sound changes the way a shot lands.

How we approach films

We describe what can be observed before drawing conclusions. A technique does not carry one fixed meaning in every film, so we distinguish a visible choice from our interpretation of its effect. Examples serve the explanation, not a universal rule.

Who it is for

The publication is for viewers who enjoy looking and listening a little more carefully. No specialist vocabulary is assumed; when a technical term helps, we explain it in context.

Our point of view

Look closely before reaching a verdict

A film’s effect often begins in its construction. We name the choices on screen and leave room for viewers to decide what they mean.
